Soon after graduating from theatre school, Steve performed in Brendon Burns' 2007 Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning show, "So I Suppose This is Offensive Now" at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The show subsequently toured to many locations during 2008 including Glasgow Comedy Festival, the Montreal 'Just for Laughs' Festival and to London's West-End at the prestigious Garrick and Duchess Theatres (filmed for DVD and TV's Comedy Central).
During 2008, Steve also appeared in series 2 and 3 of the sketch show Comedy Cuts (ITV) alongside Tom Basden, Dan Antopolski and Scott Capurro, directed by Cal McCrystal. In 2009, he played the lead role of Skinner in The Peter Hall Company's production of Michael Frayn's farce, "Balmoral", replacing Rik Mayall who had to withdraw from the production due to illness.
During this time, Steve began performing sketch comedy on the circuit with Sam Pamphilon and in late 2009 their sitcom "End To End" won the 2009 Sitcom Trials Grand Final at Leicester Square Theatre; the show has had interest from BBC and Channel 4 and is now in development. In early 2010, McNeil and Pamphilon performed in the short film, "The Office Orphan", which was shortlisted from over 1000 entries for the Short Film Award at the 2010 Rushes Soho Shorts Festival and the 2011 Los Angeles Comedy Shorts Film Festival, and recently won the Audience Award at the Cofilmic comedy film festival! In 2010 McNeil and Pamphilon also reached the Semi-Finals of the prestigious "So You Think You're Funny?" competition.
During his time at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year, Steve performed as part of Phil Nichol's Comedians Theatre Company's "Itch: A Scratch Event" at the Pleasance Courtyard, alongside Phil Cornwell and Hattie Hayridge. His main reason for being in Edinburgh last year, though, was to perform McNeil and Pamphilon: Addicted To Danger!, their debut show featuring 2008 Funny Women Finalist, Rachel Stubbings at the Pleasance Dome. The show played to sell-out audiences and received four FOUR-STAR reviews.
McNeil and Pamphilon recently completed their 2011 Edinburgh run with their critically-acclaimed show, "Which One Are You?", developed at their monthly London residency, recommended by Spoonfed, London is Funny and Chortle, and Critic's Choice in Time Out. The show was one of the Top Ten shows in this year's Amused Moose Laughter Awards. During 2011, they also reached the semi-finals of the Amused Moose Laugh Off and the Finals of the 2011 'Hackney Empire' New Act of the Year competition!
Most recently, Steve has been filming for the BBC's "Funny in 15", MTV's "Flash Prank", which will be airing worldwide in the Autumn, and Dara O Briain's University of Practical Mathematics, which will be on Dave in the new year. During his time in Edinburgh, he also reached the finals of "The Great Big Sketch Off!" at the Pleasance Courtyard.
NON-COMEDY ROLES
Though Steve's work has mainly been in comedy, he has also had roles in a number of other productions, including the critically-acclaimed 2007 Fringe Musical, "Failed States" (5 stars: Financial Times and British Theatre Guide, 4 stars: The Scotsman and The Guardian), and the development of a new play with John Godber at Hull Truck. In 2008, he played a significant role in the primetime ITV 1 drama, "Stockwell", which follows the police on the day of the tragic shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes. In 2010, Michael Frayn personally asked Steve to perform the world premiere of his adaptation of Chekhov's short story, "Plots", as part of Hampstead Theatre's "Jubilee for Anton Chekhov" alongside Miriam Margoyles and David Horovitch.
